Roofing West Vancouver Issues

Vancouver Roofing

Within Vancouver extra care is required whenever obtaining a estimate for any house. A roofing company within Vancouver must know precisely what they are coping with when getting your roof away. Unforeseen costs really are a typical scenario in Vancouver and every proprietor should be ready

Heritage- being among the earliest places within the GVRD you are able to understand that there are several fairly old houses. Having a steep pitch roofing, most likely in the vicinity of 12/12 message which essentially means 45 diploma position roof. The original roof was cedar shake sitting on strapping. I don't know whether it had been laid back or even the norm, if everyone was trying to save money but when you have this roof you probably obtained more than one layer on the top. The initial is still on and 2 other levels sit above the actual cedar tremble. I have come across house exactly where five layers sitting along with the home. According to creating code nowadays the Vancouver Roofing contractor should eliminate just about all layers if your new roof is to be positioned above. You folks often spend more because of the steepness, the actual few levels associated with roofing, the actual plywood deck and also the difficulty. You are probably two feet out of your neighbours

Roofing Vancouver

Reduced Downward slope -- Vancouver unique houses operate all through East Vancouver. The actual minor trouble with these houses in regards to roofing is the fact that dwindling roof covering companies available do tar residue and gravel. The option you've is flashlight upon or metal. Asphalt shingles can't go on these homes. Your own pitch would be to low as well as asphalt most likely would not last 10 years. Vancouver Roofing contractors that have been in the business of flashlight upon for more than 10 years are most likely reliable. Ice and snow build up on these rooftops trigger small pools to build up in your roof as well as trigger main leaking, keep the gutters and downpipes obvious.

Low Slope or Steep Downward slope cedar tremble -- Within Vancouver this is common on the West side. There is not a lot to say of Cedar within Vancouver. There is an extended period through the 60's, 70's as well as 80's when Vancouver Roofing businesses were not setting up cedar. Most Cedar roofs are new construction. cedar may be the 1 creation that the majority of problems can be established prior to the function begins

Reduced Downward slope or High Downward slope Asphalt roofing - For those who have asphalt roofing and it hasn't been changed in the last 10 years then you have a solid outdoor patio. Since the 70's asphalt arrived to the marketplace. Along with new building shiplap or even also known as tongue as well as dance had been the only real option of a strong deck. Shiplap moves a great deal during the cold months as well as in summer so plyboard ought to be layered down through the roofer

Roofing within Burnaby

Roofing within Burnaby can have it's challenges and the best way to go through them all would be to function from North in order to Southern starting at the very top associated with Burnaby. Within North Burnaby the actual hillsides begin to incline as well as decline to some fairly strong perspectives. The large problems I find listed here are driveway steepness as well as use of the house, even though this might not seem like a issue for you it is a truly major problem for any roofer who has at hand carry your own aged roofing up the slope and hands have your brand-new roof lower a slope.

The hard, a slope region in this area stored creating contractors aside and for that reason you have homes that were all constructed by individually hired construction companies. There are some servings associated with North Burnaby which have little contractors homes just about all constructed collectively however as far as that Central Burnaby offers. North Burnaby offers more fascinating constructed styles and roofs making a golf ball park figure estimate in this region fairly difficult.

Burnaby Roofing

Central Burnaby is where big construction companies having a standard architectural way of creating the house had been fairly busy during the 70`s as well as early 80`s. Having a shiplap deck becoming the only choice as well as asphalt shingles becoming the choice and placed on a house. These days shiplap may be the roofers adversary because of the fact that the tiles nowadays are not designed to work with shiplap. Attempting to persuade main Burnaby they need to re-deck the roof with plyboard offers frequently been ignored and even for good reason.

The caliber of shiplap has elevated levels of this particular area with many from it that I have come across being between 6 and Eight inches that is perfect. Apart from that this a part of Burnaby is fairly simple to roofing in with access not being a problem all that often along with a clear style in sloped roof that is clear to see. A lot of Vancouver specials focused here to along with flashlight on being the number one option from the original tar and gravel choice. Cedar rooftops tend to sprinkle the actual eastern side of this region with many converting in order to asphalt

South Burnaby tends to possess bigger rooftops that are sprinkled with asphalt as well as cedar tremble. Cedar tremble rooftops in this area are generally through houses around 20 years old. This particular home tends to convert into a asphalt roofing and many have alright access however, many do not and also the roofs aren't everything to high. Some asphalt roofs down here have plyboard decks that is usually a big saver for any home owner

West Vancouver Roofing

West Vancouver is a region associated with valley's as well as side rails, high driveways and concealed roofs. This can be a roofers headache however there are roof covering companies who are employed in the area as well as know what these people probably could be coping with. Unlike other metropolitan areas in the Metro Vancouver region, big construction businesses didn't buy large monitors of property as well as build patterned suburban cul-de-sacs. They do exist however to some smaller degree compared to additional metropolitan areas. Consequently you'll find in one road 20 homes just about all constructed differently. I suppose due to the property scenery it was the only way to obtain houses built in a few areas.

There was certainly a boom during the 70's through the shear quantity of shiplap decks out there. The majority of roofs in West Vancouver that require an upgraded are asphalt roofs which take a seat on the shiplap outdoor patio. They shingle is generally a lock shingle that was designed for shiplap but no longer obtainable in the higher Vancouver area. Most property owners in West Vancouver are learning they now need a plyboard outdoor patio to pay for the shiplap.

Cedar Roof by Tom Marchand

Several Cedar roofs exist in West Vancouver but not much that needs replacing. Most twenty years old cedar shake roofs in West Vancouver happen to be changed so you find a cedar roofing in some places. Changing cedar along with cedar isn't the all to common practice and most Cedar rooftops are in new construction.

West Vancouver Roofing

Vancouver specials are not just about all to typical within West Vancouver. Torch on and tar residue as well as gravel can be obtained but not recommended. The actual rainfall as well as blowing wind tends to be a little more extreme in West Vancouver, using the high amount associated with trees and shrubs and also the chance of a heavy snowfall fall steel is really a higher suggestion.

Getting a roof estimation within West Vancouver can be quite diverse from the individual living right on the doorstep. for those who have the steep front yard, have a roof that's steeper compared to Thirty levels and also over Two thousand sq ft than you are able to spend a lot more than $ 2000 compared to your own neighbour. The kind of roof and amount of flashing can produce a big difference. In West Vancouver it's very tough to ball recreation area a cost for this really reason. I guess you can say based on the little property you reside upon and also the style of the roof could make a big difference from a high estimate along with a low estimate. Roofing entry has become a problem with some roofing contractors needing to hands carry the old roof over 100 ft compared to hands carrying the new roof a hundred feet to the house.

Obtain three estimations to compare celery with celery but for the exact same item, gives you a chance to educate yourself and ask the right concerns. Most rooftops in West Vancouver is actually below ventilated therefore make sure when you get your roof estimation you can observe if each and every estimate you get may upgrade your ventilation or even your brand-new roofing will not last. The additional ventilation is not a add-on price so the much more the better, you cannot have a restrict upon ventilation. Sapling debris is a problem therefore keep your roofing without damaging the roof item. drip motorized inflator is probably the best type of upkeep.

The house are generally built with the same design and have the same ventilation issues so when it's time to substitute your own neighbors then its time to replace your own..

Palm with Bermuda roof by wide Picture world

Brand new construction roofing Victoria two decades ago came with in regards to a twenty year guarantee. Most rooftops start to drip soon after the 20 12 months mark and suddenly the entire street gets their own roofs changed. Whenever a Victoria roofing estimator comes to your home and you're simply on great conditions together with your neighbours you may could convince your neighbors to obtain a roofing estimation as well. The majority of Victoria roofing Contractors can offer 2 estimations. The first is the actual estimation if perhaps you were to change you home on it's own on the street. Another estimate is for you and also the neighbours that have chosen the estimate as well, if you have persuaded your own neighbours to do this.

Victoria roofing Contractors can help to save profit 2 main areas when multiple roofing. One in the shipping price of the types of materials is actually reduced whenever a roofing company can get three homes in one shipping. The second is the actual wastage, motion associated with wastage is exactly what is expensive as well as making sure that the wastage is all moved collectively allows the Victoria Roofing Company to lessen the price of your brand-new roofing. Find a very good Victoria Roofing Company

My home is Victoria and know how hard it's to locate a good service provider to operate in your home. They all appear genuine very first and they all guarantee the world. Unfortunately there are a few that actually deliver on these types of guarantees.

Roofing companies aren't any exception and need to do your own due diligence in order to discount the good ones from the poor types.

The rooftop is an important element of any house. Here's your primary barrier of many of the elements found outdoors. For those who have the leaking roof you could discover your self putting plenty of pots and pans throughout your home to trap water. In case your roofing gets really poor additionally you risk this caving in at some point.

Fortunately if a roof is actually constructed the right way it'll are several decades. You can even find a few roofs which are each so good they can are half a century.

Getting a reliable roofing organization in Victoria and you need this type of work carried out is extremely important. You want somebody who is likely to provide you with a fair bet, do the job on time, and use regular or above average supplies.

This is actually the goal you just need to fine a roof to have an area who is willing and able to do it.

Palm with Bermuda roof by wide Picture world

Here are a few things that Personally, i might look for and will make an application for not only Victoria, however every area in the country:

When i first prefer to begin with referrals. I know I'm not the only one who has a house and I wish to request other people their opinion however experienced roof covering function carried out before me personally. Buddies, family members, colleagues, associates, and other people you realize will usually not really steer you wrong. They can use a direct you to definitely an individual who has been doing a great job for them. Unless an individual isn't keen on a person they were not often suggest the roofing company in Victoria who has carried out substandard function.

Next, you want to reach minimum three estimations. Roofing jobs are costly by nature and you desire a contractor who's going to provide you with a fair and sensible cost. Keep in mind even a fair and reasonable quotation will be high. Comprehend as well that roofing contractors spend a few of the greatest insurance rates from any kind of industry within the nation. Because the function carried out roofing Contractors workers comp prices are about five times higher than other like companies. It's not unusual for this kind of organization to pay for $30 within workers compensation premiums for each 100 dollars they shell out within pay-roll. These expenses need to be passed on to the consumer. So, when you are getting an offer from a roofer understand that at least Thirty to 40% associated with what he's charging a person is just to cover admin and insurance charges. An individual who submits to you and very low bid is most likely uninsured were not insured at all.

Everything should be created on the agreement. This includes the materials for use in your home and the time that it will take to install them. Do not depart anything like a verbal agreement. You need to be in a position to accurately assess what you had been obtaining for the cost you are having to pay making an informed choice. Once the estimators arrive they will try to bait a person into signing some thing immediately. Do not do it. You need three estimates, alongside in your table, and you need to take time to see all of them each carefully including the small print.

Finally, check on the Victoria's roofing Contractors experience and reputation. You want them to possess sufficient encounter to be able to do the job. Brilliantly, you want a company that's been neighborhood and nothing may shock them. Should they have existed not less than 5 years they're going to have the reputation of either doing excellent function are now being people. Some of the best individuals to ask our nearby contractors. Even if it is their own competitor a business proprietor were not often talk poor about an additional organization unless of course he or she really seems he does treatment horrible function. You should consider asking roofing providers who they think is the greatest. They work with 100s a roofer's every month and therefore are in a excellent placement to give you within info.

Fundamental essentials 3 items I would look for when choosing my personal roofing contractor. I am picky concerning the people I choose to do business with and you ought to end up being fussy too. You cannot rely on a companies yellow web page advert to inform a person what they are about. Each and every company states of the the best. Roofing companies are no exception and often go with what are the largest phonebook advert of the most popular criminals.

Do your homework and you should be able to find a decent Victoria roofing business. Take your time and do not let anyone rush a person. Opt for your own stomach and don't spend your money along with anyone you are feeling unpleasant with

The right roofer Victoria is appropriate at your door step should you choose your own research as well as thoroughly check the corporation's history and status. This will be sure you don't get sold on some thing you don't need or even using the services of a disadvantage designer.

Make sure you click here for more info about Victoria roofing contractors.

Making Money Your

Blogger Andrew Trench recently presented a theory on the threshold of when Internet penetration starts to matter, writing:

Social networks have also been given plenty of credit for the revolution unfolding in Egypt.

So I went and had a look at the numbers over on www.internetworldstats.com to see what they could tell us about these two scenarios. Well, fascinatingly, both Egypt and Tunisia have seen a massive growth in internet users and internet penetration over the last 10 years.

Both have now got internet penetration of over 20% and in Tunisia's case it was as high as 34%.

While it is clearly simplistic to over-state this factor and there must be many more drivers contributing to such a rapid political uprising, it is obviously a factor as evidenced by the Egyptian regime pulling the plug on the country's internet access to try and block the rising tide of revolt.

My back-of-napkin theory is this: that a rapid increase in internet penetration in a repressive regime does play an important role as it provides an unfettered channel of communication allowing disaffected citizens to share views - and more importantly - to rapidly organise and mobilise.

If Egypt and Tunisia are valid case studies, it looks like internet penetration of around 20% is the mark.

Geopolitics & Macroeconomics adds:

Internet penetration: Social networking sites were critical to sustaining the momentum in the recent protests. The internet penetration in Egypt is 16%. In Libya, it is a meagre 5% [1]. The unrest in Libya has thus far remained concentrated in regions that are geographically distant from the seat of ‘real' power (see more on this below). The dependence of momentum on internet communication is far greater in Libya than in Egypt where protests began in Cairo itself.

Taking the conversation to Pakistan, Sabene Saigol writes, on BrandRepublic:

Perhaps one reason for this is that we're still not that used to communicating via the ‘net - maybe we need greater broadband and internet penetration. Personally I think it is more to do with culture - while Pakistani internet users are savvy to using social media to connect with friends, I feel they have not yet ‘crossed over' to seeing SM as a means for professional communications - or even wider social communications that go beyond their immediate circle. Yes, there are no doubt savvy people - both within marketing and tech circles, and outside - however, these people are likely a tiny proportion of the total number of ‘net and social media users.

In February of 2007, 83.24 percent of users visiting TechCrunch did so from a Windows machine. One year later, in February 2008, the stranglehold remained firm at 80.44 percent. In February 2009, the number was at 74.04 percent. Last year, it was 61.59 percent. And this year? The number of people visiting our site from Windows machines dipped to 53.84 percent.

The writing is on the wall.

Look at those numbers again for a second. In four years, Windows share among TechCrunch readers has fallen 30 percentage points. That’s incredible.

The knee-jerk reaction in the comment section will likely be something like “it’s because you guys cover Apple so much”. But the fact of the matter is that Macintosh share, after rising for three of those four years, fell last year as well. It’s the mobile devices — specifically the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices — that are eating away at Windows.

In fact, if the trend over the past four years continues at about the same pace, in two years, devices made by Apple (Macs, iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads) will surpass devices that run Windows as the top visitors to TechCrunch. And depending on how popular the iPad 2, iPhone 5, and OS X Lion are, it could easily happen next year.

Here are the broken down numbers:

Feb 2007

  • Windows: 83.24%

  • Mac: 13.59%

  • Linux: 2.51%

Feb 2008

  • Windows: 80.44%

  • Mac: 15.15%

  • Linux: 2.97%

  • iPhone: 0.77%

  • iPod: 0.15%

Feb 2009

  • Windows: 74.04%

  • Mac: 20.48%

  • Linux: 3.01%

  • iPhone: 1.60%

  • iPod: 0.28%

  • Android: 0.09%

Feb 2010

  • Windows: 61.59%

  • Mac: 28.62%

  • iPhone: 4.07%

  • Linux: 3.49%

  • Android: 0.87%

  • iPod: 0.53%

Feb 2011

  • Windows: 53.84%

  • Mac: 27.64%

  • iPhone: 6.72%

  • iPad: 3.44%

  • Linux: 3.28%

  • Android: 3.06%

  • iPod: 0.62%

While even the last batch of stats shows that Windows still has a nice cushion over number two, Mac, if you add the Apple products put together, it’s a different story.

  • Feb 2007: 13.59% Apple products

  • Feb 2008: 16.07% Apple products

  • Feb 2009: 22.36% Apple products

  • Feb 2010: 33.22% Apple products

  • Feb 2011: 38.42% Apple products

In the four year span, Apple has added 25 percentage points to their share among TechCrunch readers. That nearly all of the 30 percentage points that Windows lost in that same span (Android’s growth pretty much fills in the rest).

So it currently stands at Microsoft’s 53.84 percent versus Apple’s 38.42 percent. Again, a big year for iPad, iPhone, and Mac could mean a changing of the guard as soon as next year. But unless something drastic changes, you can be sure that Apple will be dominant among TechCrunch readers in two years.

The latest rumors have Windows 8 showing up sometime in mid/late 2012. But the fact of the matter is that Windows 7, much more widely praised than the disaster that was Vista, hasn’t helped Microsoft buck this trend among our readers. Perhaps they’re only hope of gaining back share at this point is Windows Phone. So far, that hasn’t been going too well. Nokia should help that, but will it be enough to offset the Windows losses?

Humorously, Microsoft’s best hope for not falling to Apple may well be Android. If Google’s platform continues to make gains, it could prolong Apple passing Microsoft.

But again, Apple has iPhone 5, iPad 2, and OS X Lion on the immediate horizon — all within the next few months. And then there’s the very real possibility of another iPad in the fall.

The iPad 2 and iPhone 5 are likely to push the Apple share forward immediately. But don’t sleep on OS X Lion either. The early indications are that Apple has indeed made it much more iOS-like. That means millions of iPad/iPhone/iPod touch owners who have traditionally been PC users, are going to feel a lot more comfortable on a Mac than ever before.

And a new PC-to-Mac data migration system built in to Lion will only help that.

OS X Lion is going to feed off of iOS users, and vice versa. And the Mac ecosystem is going to continue to expand. Just as happened in the browser world with Chrome taking over, a transition is happening among TechCrunch readers in the ecosystem space. The numbers don’t lie. And Microsoft better pray that our readers aren’t leading indicators of overall trends in the space — which is exactly what you have been in the past.

Apple advertises its products as magical. They’re at the intersection of “technology and the liberal arts,” Steve Jobs said today. Something that moves your heart, not just your lust for technology. Will consumers still buy that in 2011?

The big picture question of the day is whether Apple has done it again. With the original iPad, Apple crushed its rivals, taking more than 90 percent of the tablet market in 2010 and selling more than 15 million units. Jobs predicted today that 2011 will be the year of the iPad 2. Based on what I have seen today, I think he’s mostly, but not entirely, right.

Competitors will discover that Apple has a lot of inherent financial advantages, including being a low-cost leader. That may not sound intuitive, but I believe it has to be true. It is selling so much volume of its products that it can get discounts on parts and manufacturing services that no one else can get.

When it sells its products in stores, it also doesn’t have to give away 20 percent of the margin to a retailer. That is a huge financial advantage. Carriers are also willing to subsidize the costs of Apple products in a way that they won’t with other tablet vendors. All of these things may explain why the Motorola Xoom, a very cool product, is selling for $800 while Apple has priced its new devices at $499 to $829, (and dropped the price of the old iPad to $399). Apple has also left very little room for rivals here, since it has signed up both AT&T and Verizon. Perhaps there is room for rivals to sell $199 machines, but users probably aren’t going to like them.

Those are reasons why any cool Apple mobile product could beat other rivals. But Apple has also done some smart things with the iPad 2. It has created another rev of its microprocessor, the A5, which has two cores, or computing brains. And it has nine times faster graphics than its old A4 chip. Since Apple designs this chip itself, it doesn’t have to give away much margin to a chip design firm. It only has to give a small margin to a chip manufacturer such as Samsung to make the chips.

Apple has also custom-designed the A5 to run Apple applications on a device with a 10-hour battery life. Apple should have an edge there, as it won’t sell the A5 to rivals. But if this is an advantage, it isn’t likely to last long, as Nvidia is being very aggressive with a new quad-core chip that it could sell to any Android rivals.

The design of the iPad 2 is where Apple has more advantages. The iPad 2 will have faster web-browsing with a new version of Safari. It has two cameras that will inspire a lot of video and photo-related apps. The availability of the Mac applications — iMovie, Garage Band, and Photo Booth — on the iPad 2 will make a lot of users happy. More interesting features will come with new releases of the iOS, or Apple’s operating system in the fairly near future.

There are some users who won’t like the restrictions of Apple’s ecosystem. If they want universal serial bus (USB) and SD card ports, they are out of luck. Apple didn’t change the resolution of its screen either, leaving it at 1024 x 768. Competitors could add these options and put emphasis on them as selling points. (Critics are disappointed that Apple did not improve the display, but that’s a big cost issue others have too).

Apple has also made great improvements in the feel of the product. It’s 33 percent thinner, 2 ounces lighter, and it has a wonderful new screen cover that doubles as a stand for the device. (It wakes up the device when you peel it back and it has micro-fibers that clean the screen when the cover is on).

Now here is why Jobs is not entirely right. Apple has come up with a stunning machine at prices that the competitors will have a hard time beating. But it is almost inevitable that Android-based tablets will gain market share on Apple.

So far, I don’t see the Android machine that will beat the iPad 2. But the potential is there, given ingredients such as Android 3.0, Nvidia Tegra 2 chips and other fast microprocessors, and 4G LTE. The latter is the main weakness in Apple’s armor.

LTE is fast, with a minimum speed on Verizon at around 12 megabits a second and actual speeds running much higher than that now. Getting access to 4G LTE is as big a benefit as having access to lots of cool apps, from my point of view. Right now, the timing of the still-young LTE technology means that Apple cannot yet put it into its mass-produced, lowest-cost tablet computers.

If LTE costs come down sometime soon, then Apple can launch a new version of the iPad to incorporate the technology. But it’s not a simple upgrade, as it means that the hardware of the machine — including the radio chip — has to change. And for now, LTE chips are larger than their 3G equivalents, so the heat dissipation and product size are affected. In other words, LTE can force Apple to redesign the iPad.

Apple can do that. But Android tablet makers might be able to move faster than Apple directly into the 4G LTE tablet market. If they do that, then they will have found a scenario where they could steal a march on Apple. Apple is not likely to let that gap last for a long time, but it might be enough for Apple to lose some share this year.

Apple’s leadership position in this market will be hard to beat, but the collective weight and reach of Android rivals could erode it. And here’s a sobering thought: If Apple eventually winds up with only 30 percent of the tablet market, it could still be No. 1, and its place as the largest technology company in the world will not be at risk.

Check out Apple’s overview video on the iPad 2 and Jobs’ comments on technology and the liberal arts below.

Recognizing Women's History Month, New Deal 2.0 tells the surprising story of how women became citizens -- and how their economic lives have evolved along with their rights. Allida Black urges action on UN Resolution 1325, which ensures equal citizenship for women across the globe.

The monumental elections of Presidents Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (Liberia), Roza Otunbayeva (Krygyzstan), Dilma Rousseff (Brazil), and Prime Minister Julia Gillard (Australia) and the game-changing appointments of Dr. Michelle Bachelet as Under-Secretary General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UNWomen and Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State proved that women can govern, run preeminent human rights organizations, set international policy, and place women at the center of diplomacy, development, and peace.

But the question remains -- if women can be president, why can't they be citizens? Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights declares, "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and in rights." Yet it took another twenty years after its signing to get the international conventions on political and civil rights and on economic, social and cultural rights -- and, in the United States, another twenty plus years for Congress to adopt legislation ensuring women's political and economic rights. It took another thirteen years for the United Nations to ratify (without the support of the United States) the Convention to End All Forms of Discrimination against Women. And in 2011, the US House of Representatives and other foreign governing bodies still toy with legislation essential to women's identities, ranging from limiting access to reproductive health services and marriage to crafting sentencing guidelines that treat girls and women as felons and charges those that have abducted and abused them with misdemeanors.

In a 1946 column, written before she joined the UN Commission on Human Rights, Eleanor Roosevelt urged women to "call on the Governments of the world to encourage women everywhere to take a more conscious part in national and international affairs, and on women to come forward and share in the work of peace and reconstruction as they did in the war and resistance." More than fifty years later, at the dawn of a new century, the UN Security Council -- pressured by a well-organized international women's lobby, Hillary Clinton, and other stateswomen and embarrassed by the rampant use of rape and genital dismemberment as tools of war -- adopted Resolution 1325. It urged "Member States to ensure increased representation of women at all decision-making levels in national, regional and international institutions and mechanisms for the prevention, management, and resolution of conflict."

Now ten years later, the campaign -- indeed the struggle -- to enforce this resolution rages across the United States as much as it does across Egypt or the Congo or Afghanistan.

It is tempting to construct this resolution narrowly -- to see it as a tool of armistice rather than reconstruction, as a vehicle to protect women rather than empower them. To do so, to paraphrase Albus Dumbledore, would be to do what is easy rather than what is right.

UN1325 is on the front line in the campaign for women's citizenship. It is a battle to ensure that economic, social and cultural rights cannot be divorced from, or considered separately from, political and civil rights. It is the struggle to reclaim democracy promotion away from post-Cold War politics, self-interested development and the campaign against terror and place it at the heart of citizen participation.

Just as important, it is a campaign to ensure women's rights as citizens as much as it is a campaign to force governments to act responsibly to all its citizens. While equality and human dignity have no sex, policy designed without taking stock of gender differences often perpetuates discrimination.

As Eleanor Roosevelt would say, both citizens and governments must "recognize that the goal of full participation in the life and responsibilities of their countries and of the world community is a common objective" and one "which the women of the world should assist one another" in achieving.

Making Money Jobs

Gov. Perry Talks Up Job Creation As He Prepares To Lay Off One-Third Of Texas’ Teachers

During a speech last week, Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) “pledged to continue strengthening the jobs climate” in his state. His director of administration added later that “the governor has put a priority on bringing jobs to Texas.”

However, jobs teaching Texas’ children to compete in the 21st century evidently don’t count:

Gov. Rick Perry can’t quit talking about jobs. He used the word 19 times in his recent state of the state address and has made it a top spending priority.

But if Perry realizes his vision of a budget balanced through cuts alone, 100,000 teachers could lose their jobs. That’s about a third of the 333,000 teachers employed by Texas public schools.

“If you lay off 1,000 teachers you’re going to have some greater number of that jobs loss because, presumably, those teachers are not going to be spending money in those communities,” said Terry Clower, director of the Center for Economic Development and Research at the University of North Texas. “That’s going to flow through the economy.” Indeed, the Center on Public Policy Priorities has estimated that Texas’ proposed cuts to public education will result in the loss of more than 100,000 private sector jobs.

Making matters worse, just a few weeks ago, Perry was actually extolling the virtues of education as one of the “building blocks of the economy“:

As our economy continues to reflect advances in technology, our educational approaches must do the same with an increased emphasis on the science, technology, engineering and math skills that Texans need to compete for future jobs. These are the basic building blocks of an economy that has drawn new employers to our state and our calling is to fortify them.

Of course, Perry could accept money from a bill passed by Congress last year aimed at preserving teachers’ jobs: Texas’ share of that money comes to $830 million. However, Perry is standing firm in his conviction that he should be allowed to spend that money on whatever he wants, going so far as to sue the Department of Education over the bill’s requirement that Texas use its share of the funding to maintain education spending. Previously, Perry has accepted federal education spending, only to cut state education spending by the same amount and use the saved money to bolster Texas’ Rainy Day Fund.

How is Elop going to address this by
using Windows OS? He has to do more than just charge more, he has
to produce better product at competitive prices, which keep getting
lower. Elop will have to license the Widows OS, which is an
expense, one that he would bear to nowhere near the same extent if
he used Android. I feel he mistakenly looks at this as Google
commoditizing the Android platform, in lieu of the more reasonable
perspective of Google commoditizing the entire portable computer
space.

Well, the answer has arrived. Microsoft is buying Xx% of Nokia for paying Nokia over $1 billion to product Windows Phone 7 hardware.
Nearly all of this money is undoubtedly going into R&D and
marketing. Nokia and Microsoft (their new defacto owners) invariably see
Google as the pre-eminent trheat and are pulling out all of the stops
to nullify said threat. This also answers the question of how Elop, the
Nokia CEO will be able to deal with the reduced margins of having to
buy OS licenses while competing with vendors who get Android for free –
Microsoft is not only footing the bill, but investing in the business
as well. You see, the drop in Nokia’s share price is highly unwarranted
and their is visible synergy in this deal. Nokia gets to remove the
costs of OS R&D from its line times, sunk costs that have apparently
had negative incremental returns as they have had their asses handed to
them by Apple and most definitely Google – who knocked them off of
their number one market share perch in just over a year.

Microsoft gets the economic benefits of an existing hardware platform
that happens to have the number one marketshare metric in the world,
and gets it for just over a billion dollars. This is a win-win
situation. The question is,  will it win againt Google. Both companies
will still fail if they don’t execute on Google-time, who has compressed
development cycle years into months – literally!

From the Bloomberg article linked above:

Shrinking Margins (yeah, you’ve hear thist from me often enough)

Espoo, Finland-based Nokia needs to cut
costs to keep operating margins from narrowing further, after they
shrank to 4.9 percent last year from 19 percent a decade earlier. For
2011 and 2012, Nokia may cut its budget for research and development in
devices and services by about a third from last year’s spending of about
3 billion euros, said Sami Sarkamies, a Helsinki-based analyst with
Nordea Bank.

Microsoft spokeswoman Melissa Havel
declined to comment on the specifics of the agreement. Laurie Armstrong,
a spokeswoman for Nokia, said the final contract hasn’t been signed and
the company will share further details when they are complete.

Nokia’s royalty payments will help
Redmond, Washington- based Microsoft make a profit on the accord even
after the payments to Nokia, one person said. Some of the payment to
Nokia would be made before the company starts selling the phones,
meaning Microsoft bears some upfront cost in the partnership.

Microsoft shareholders want the company
to salvage its mobile-software business while also reining in costs. The
company doesn’t break out results for its mobile-software unit, and
instead groups them with the profitable Xbox video-game business, making it difficult to evaluate the financial performance of phone software.

Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer
has come under pressure from investors and his own board to improve
sales of mobile software after the company lost market share to Google
and Apple. Microsoft stock has declined 7.8 percent so far this year.

The agreement for the more than
billion-dollar payment was part of a campaign by Microsoft to keep Nokia
from choosing Google’s Android operating system, one of the people
said. Nokia also opted for Microsoft because Windows Phone software,
which is newer than Android and has a smaller number of handsets for
sale, gives Nokia a better chance to stand out, one of the people said.

The agreement also has Microsoft paying Nokia for the right to use its patent portfolio, one of the people said.

As part of the deal, Microsoft will use
Nokia’s Navteq mapping products for functions such as geolocation
services and selling local advertising and coupons tied to a user’s
position. If successful, that also could generate additional revenue for
Nokia, which will share in the sales. The two companies will also
divide revenue from services like search and advertising, Microsoft
President Andy Lees said last month.

I’ve been warning my subscribers about margin compression in this
space, and its about to get much uglier – to the extreme benefit of
consumers of personal and enterprise tech. Previous (and prescient)

Monetizing the Mobile Computing Race

We have a pretty firm idea of who is in the pole position as of now,
but that position is both risky and volatile, not to mention medium to
long term in nature – see Navigating BoomBustBlog Subscription Material To Find The Google Valuation Drilldown.

A more risk averse strategy is to go long on the component vendors
who supply those battling for pole position. Last week we released the
document Long candidate #1 – Hardware: The Mobile Computing Wars
to subscribers that outlined who our number one pick was after an
initial scan. This is not necessarily the absolute final say on the
matter since we have yet to perform a full forensic analysis, but the
company does look good in comparison to over 120 peers. Non-subscribers

I am releasing the draft of the full shortlist of prospective long

informative nonetheless.  See Mobile Computing Vendor Long List Note WIP. Those who wish to subscribe should click here.
